Samsung recently announced a showcase of a Smart Home Energy Management System (SHEMS) supported chiefly by its SmartThings Energy service. Located in Brobyholm, a residential community development located by Stockholm, Sweden, the system is a part of a model home project designed for visitors and future residents of the Brobyholm community.

The project was done in partnership alongside smart home engineers at ABB, solar company SMA and real estate firm S. Property, with Samsung supplying the appliances that will sync to SmartThings Energy to help control, monitor and save energy.

Together with photovoltaics (PV) energy production and energy storage systems (ESS) provided by S. Property Group, each home within the Brobyholm community will aim to maximize its energy efficiency.

Noteworthy here, however, is Samsung’s ongoing partnership with ABB. Having initially worked with the company back in 2022, Samsung will be further building on its partnership with ABB by integrating its SmartThings Energy with ABB’s home automation solution ABB-free@home.

Residents of Brobyholm will be able to connect their appliances and devices to a centralized control system designed to automatically save energy time and cost, with users still retaining insight into the systems’ energy consumption through the SmartThings mobile application.

The smart show home first opened to the public for viewing on November 9 with completion of the first 500 homes within the Brobyholm community slated to be completed in 2025. According to a press release issued by Samsung, the property developer, S. Property Group, plans to then expand the available housing at Brobyholm by up to 2000 homes by 2028 based on demand.

Since energy management exploded onto the scene as a topic at CEDIA Expo 2022, the category has experienced a more gradual development pace among manufacturers. Samsung itself has been steadily expanding the reach and capabilities of its SmartThings ecosystem, even touting how its SmartThings Energy is ENERGY STAR-certified by the Environmental Protection Agency. The company also debuted a Net Zero Home Concept run on SmartThings Energy at IFA 2023.
