Vivint Smart Home, an NRG company, has announced the launch of Vivint Smart Lighting, a lighting solution that enables users to place switches anywhere throughout the home without the need for extensive electrical work. This is made possible, the company notes, through the product’s use of the Zigbee standard.
“Smart lighting has been one of our top requested categories and we’re thrilled to bring this experience to customers,” said Jim Nye, Chief Product Officer at Vivint.
“In developing Vivint Smart Lighting, our goal was to create the most user-friendly and effective lighting solution that overcomes common pain points and integrates seamlessly with the Vivint platform. We’re excited to bring this new category to the Vivint suite and to continue expanding the power of our smart home ecosystem.”

Integrators have also showcased significant interest towards the category, allowing industry events like Lightapalooza to reach phenomenal heights, while firms such as Light Can Help You, Kaleidolight and Lighting Boss increase their support in helping integrators in make the transition to this new product vertical.

Slated for availability August 23, 2023, the Vivint Smart Lighting Bundle will cost $299.99 with a flat $5 monthly service fee, and consist of three core components. These include eight smart bulbs powered by Zigbee, Two Vivint Smart Light Switches which require no additional wiring to install, and a Vivint Smart Lighting Birdge.
Initially the bulbs will be available as Standard A19 bulbs, Flood bulbs (BR30), and LED recessed lights, however, more bulbs will be added over time, according to Vivint. The company also notes that because the system uses the Zigbee network, most Zigbee lights will work with Vivint Smart Switches.
This also means that the installation will require no additional network infrastructure, outside of the owner needing a Vivint Smart Home Hub. Additionally, the unique lack of wiring results in a smart lighting solution that Vivint informs is controllable in all states.
This is unlike other retrofit solutions on the market, which commonly require a constant power source to be controlled by the user.
Security Lighting Adds to Smart Home Capabilities
In a press release regarding the announcement, Vivint notes that the real draw of this new offering comes in the potential it offers when interacting with the rest of the Vivint smart home ecosystem.
For instance, when smart lighting is paired with Vivint sensors and cameras, users and professionals alike can start to program specific automations. A simple example is the lights turning on as a homeowner approaches their home, however, Vivint has suggested that these automations can get as specific as the house turning off all lights as the homeowner climbs into bed for the evening.
Other features, such as Away Lighting, also elevates the offering into something far more substantial than its out-of-the-box form, allowing the system to cycling lighting on and off to make it seem like someone is always home.
Additionally, smart lighting can be paired with the company’s existing Smart Deter feature. If an associated Vivint Outdoor Camera or Doorbell Camera Pro detects someone in the set Deter Zone, the lights can automatically turn on – just like it would if someone was home and checking in on what’s happening.
