Google is introducing a new AI feature in Google Home designed to help users with little coding experience create advanced automations in the recently launched script editor.
The new “help me script,” available later this year in public preview, will give users a starting point for coding more personalized automations, the company says in a blog. Via the user’s Google Home account on Google Home for web, the script editor will allow users to describe what they want to happen in natural language.
For example, users can tell script editor, “If my outdoor camera sees someone after dark, turn on the porch light and make an announcement,” or “When the smoke alarm goes off, flash all the lights in the house and announce an emergency over the speakers.”
With the help of generative AI, script editor will generate the code to provide that wanted automation. Users can then copy and paste the code into the script editor. Like other generative AI tools such as Google’s own Bard, Bing, ChatGPT and others, users are urged to check the code for accuracy and make any necessary edits.
“Because ‘help me script’ is powered by a large language model, it’s constantly learning and improving, generating more accurate and personalized scripts every day,” writes Indu Ramamurthi, senior product manager for Google Home, in a blog.
The Future of Digital Lighting & Control
As a custom integrator, lighting is in demand. Effective communication, education and showcasing the value proposition of LED light fixtures in conjunction with integrative control systems are the keys to overcoming challenges and closing sales in this specialized market. Register Now!Google first introduced the script editor in the Google Home app this spring, giving users a new way to create and edit home automations using YAML.
According to Google, users can use the tool build powerful automations with nearly 100 starters, conditions and actions for Google Home and third-party devices, including many Matter devices.
For example, homeowners can use the script editor to use Home/Away as s starter and condition to change the lights upon leaving or returning, vacuum while the home is empty, and control the camera based on household presence.
The script editor can also be used to use sensors to start automations, including motion-triggered lights with Matter occupancy sensors or turning on air purifiers when indoor air quality is poor.
In August, Google released new capabilities in script editor, including nine new starters and nine new actions.
