This client wished to be by the water and found a home with a beautiful view of the Long Island Sound, but it required a major renovation, especially to match their green aspirations. Well-regarded metro New York City integrator InnerSpace Electronics had completed a full-scale integrated control system in the homeowners’ previous residence, and so they were brought on to develop the luxurious, eco-friendly control system that ultimately helped net the house a Green Building Award.

However, according to InnerSpace President Barry Reiner and CFO & Co-founder Andrea Reiner, the project was not without some wrinkles, not the least of which was the focus on environmental sustainability in the system.

“The client asked us to replicate the system functions of this original system in their new home. However, the focus of this new project was to be lighting design, fixture selection and placement, and lighting control,” says Andrea Reiner.

“Our client wanted as many renewable and energy efficient features as possible. Control of the environmental systems was of utmost importance to them.”

InnerSpace Fills Large-Scale Job with Loads of Lighting Elements

InnerSpace had the good fortune to work closely with this client and their team to help achieve success on this project. The owners wanted an innovative lighting design for both interior and exterior, this was paramount for the project, Reiner adds. They also expressed interest in a full-scale AV system, motorized window treatments, HVAC controls, security system controls, surveillance camera access, pool system control and wine cellar monitoring.

The resulting system from InnerSpace spec’d Savant control system components, AudioControl amplification, Samsung televisions, Lutron QS lighting control, Lutron Palladiom shading systems, Tech Element lighting fixtures, WAC lighting fixtures, Lucetta/Diode LED strip lighting, DMX interfaces for control of tunable white and RGB+W LED lighting, Marantz surround processor, IC Realtime surveillance cameras, Sonance invisible speakers, Strong equipment racks. Additionally, the landscape lighting integrated Coastal Source, Lucetta LED strips and Artemide Reeds Outdoor Lamps.

UK Designer Carefully Choreographs Rockin’ Light Show

For interior lighting design, InnerSpace worked with the client’s family friend Trent O’Connor from Archlite Design, a UK-based designer specializing in theater, event sport and the music industry lighting. He was lighting director/operator for such bands as Queen and Pink, Reiner notes.

“Together, we chose fixture types and placement throughout in efforts to present an innovative and unique lighting design,” she says.

InnerSpace Electronics supplied and project managed the installation of all the fixtures. Exterior lighting and landscape lighting design was handled solely by InnerSpace. Lighting design and fixture recommendations took 150 hours; project management took 100 hours; and physical field installation took approximately 110 days.

The biggest challenges, according to the Reiners, were centered around the design and fixture choices as well as the plans and documentation to produce this system.

“Integration of different styles of fixtures in a natural and harmonious way took a lot of planning and coordination between InnerSpace and the related trades.”

Team of Trades Turns Game Plan into Green Building Award-Winning Project

InnerSpace coordinated with the architect, designer, builder, project electrician, millworker, and landscaper.

“This project has a very high level of detail and partnering with these trades was crucial to this project,” Reiner explains, adding that the client wanted a strong team that he knew would work well together.

He chose an architect and builder who had built homes for two of his friends, and InnerSpace had known the client for 20+ years.

“It was a wonderful team to work with as the architect, Pat Miller of Residential Design, and the builder, Marc Fuscaldo of J.J. Fuscaldo Builders, were very involved and cared deeply about the project.” Plus, the client was very involved in all aspects of the integrator’s work, she notes.

“The client is thrilled with the result and literally uses all the system features. This was an extremely well-executed project, and, in the process, we were able to build strong relationships with the builder and architect. Also, the client has been very helpful in spreading the word of this special project.”
